3 Things Zlatan Got Right

The biggest lessons we can learn from a crazy person

Happy Monday, Footyfam!

It’s another week to get after it.

And after reading what’s to come,

You’re going to feel just as motivated to get the work done as we do.

Let’s get to it!

Arsenal showing their true firepower

According to Opta Analyst, Arsenal have become the first club in Premier League history to score two or more goals in 7 consecutive halves of football.

In their last 6 games, they’ve scored 25 goals.

Bukayo Saka is leading their charge with 7 of them.

Even though they’re gunning for the Premier League title with this streak, the Champions League is providing some massive problems.

They’ve lost 5 straight UCL knockout-round matches.

Will Saudi money take them far enough?

There are some massive rumors buzzing about what this offseason will look like for players moving to Saudi Arabia.

Some current ones are Kevin De Bruyne, Casemiro, and Mohamed Salah.

The question is, will money speak loudly enough to get more big-time players into the developing league?

Will buying the biggest names be enough to sustain the football flame?

3 Things Zlatan Got Right

One could describe Zlatan Ibrahimović by many words.

For most, delusional and arrogant are among them.

However…

That take is completely incorrect.

Stay with me here.

Our perceptions form the reality that we see around us.

If you’re always thinking of blue cars, you’re most likely to notice a blue car.

If you’re always thinking of reasons to be upset, then you’ll always find reasons to be upset.

And if you’re looking for opportunities, you'll always find opportunities.

This is something that Zlatan understood.

It’s delusional to think that you can rank among the best players in the world.

But you could never achieve that by thinking you'd always be a run-of-the-mill player.

Some may call him crazy, but I fully believe that Ibra has one of the best mentalities that football has ever seen.

Here are three things that we can learn from him.

1. Set sights high and get to work

In 2017, Ibrahimovic suffered an injury that no footballer ever wants to go through.

A torn ACL.

It requires surgery and a tedious rehab regimen.

Zlatan said that he would be back quicker than any other player.

For reference, most people are cleared to play about a year post-surgery.

He was back on the pitch after just seven months.

The secret here isn’t that he’s a freak of nature and magically recovered all on his own.

It’s that he set his goals as high as he could and showed up every day for them.

Here’s what he had to say about it:

“The only secret has been working hard. Those close to me know what I have been doing – I was working five, six hours a day. When it happened I said to everybody giving up was not an option. My only focus was on coming back and coming back better. For that you need to work hard. I know when I’m back it’s my head playing, not my knee.”

2. The difference between arrogance and confidence

There is one major thing that separates arrogance from confidence.

Responsibility.

Arrogant people

  • Want the spotlight on them when success comes

  • Point fingers when struggles show up

On the other hand…

Confident people

  • Shine the spotlight on others when success comes

  • Take responsibility when struggles arise.

If there’s one thing about Zlatan, he knows that his success is not his own success.

It’s the success of everyone around him that has helped him get to where he went.

He believes he is the tide that can lift all ships, but he also believes he needs the ships around him.

He believes he is the best, not only for himself but for everyone around him.

3. It doesn’t matter who else believes in you

If there’s one thing that was consistent throughout his career, it’s that Zlatan was constantly getting laughed at.

And not because he’s a funny guy.

People were laughing at the things he would say about himself.

Like in an interview with Piers Morgan, he mentions, “Lions, they don’t compare themselves to humans.”

This is followed by about 10 seconds of Morgan laughing at the statement.

Zlatan smiles.

But it’s not an embarrassed smile.

You can tell he still believes that he is on a whole other plane of humanity.

He doesn’t need the approval of someone who doesn’t operate on the same level.

He trusts himself and continues to move in the direction that he wants.
